Megabus Celebrates Earth Day, Everyday.
Recently we sat down with Bryony Chamberlain, Director of Operations for Megabus, and, as we found out, a fervent advocate for green initiatives. With Earth Day fast approaching, Megabus won’t be changing their prices (who can really beat a $1 trip, anyway?) or their principles – because everyday seems to be Earth Day for this bus company. “We always have low price tickets out there,” Chamberlain says. “We’re very keen to work with green charities. We’ve become a main sponsor of Cool Air Clean Planet, a company that promotes green travel and living styles to the younger generation, especially students.”
Megabus’s dedication to being green has even been made official. Their Green Coach Certification, a program run by the University of Vermont, can be noted by the giant sticker on the outside of their buses. “It is important to show that we are one of the greenest methods of travel out there,” Chamberlain says, “We wanted to have justification backing up our green credentials. Someone independent verifying our claim makes us even more trustworthy.”
Chamberlain also reiterates the incredible statistics that make bus travel so much more sustainable than other forms of transportation. This bus company doesn’t just save miles, it saves mega miles. Two of Megabus’s double-deckers transport almost as many people as three standard 54-57-passenger coaches, reducing carbon emissions and fuel exertion using only one engine. “Most car journeys you’re going to get 34 passenger miles per gallon,” she says, “On a bus you’re getting 500 passenger miles per gallon. With the type of vehicles we have, and the amount of road space taking a bus can share – we think its the way forward.”
While Earth Day may only be one day, saving the planet can be done everyday through green travel. The progressive thinking of Chamberlain and Megabus serves as a look into a brighter future for the environment.
